Tasmanian Law Reform Institute considers “conversion practices” ban

1 December 2020

The Tasmanian Law Reform Institute has recently announced a consultation on Conversion Practices: Law Reform Options for Tasmania with submissions closing on 7 January 2021.

This Inquiry was initiated by a community reference from peak Tasmanian LGBTQA+ stakeholder bodies and representatives, and the "expert panel" that assisted with the development of the discussion paper included LGBT activists, academics who have campaigned against religious freedom and a progressive Uniting Church Minister.  UTAS, which hosts the Institute, also hosts the law journal that Professor Patrick Parkinson, Dean of Law at the University of Queensland, claims "refused to publish his paper on transgender laws because it did not “advance human rights” and referred to “biological” sex."

The Institute, like equivalent bodies around the country, does not directly propose legislation, but its Final Report and recommendations will be provided to the State government and are highly influential.

Schools can download a copy of the issues paper from the Institute's website here.  CSA will be making a detailed submission on behalf of members.
