2022 Overall Event Theme
The theme for this year’s conference is leadership but this is not, crucially, a traditional event for leaders as defined by title or role. Why? Well, leadership itself is a relationship and as Walter C. Wright reminds us, ‘a relationship in which one person seeks to influence the thoughts, behaviours, beliefs or values of another person’. In schools, like so many other service sector organisations, we are all leaders – whatever our job. We rarely lead things, or particularities, but rather we enter into a vital relationship with people, who guide and shape various aspects of organisational culture and life. So this is a conference for all staff. Thematically stranded, we will explore the leadership of:
- pedagogy - understanding and improving the interaction between practitioner and student and their relationship to the concrete learning space
- the pastoral - the development of the whole child across their entire school experience
- people and culture - how a school best enables and empowers its staff to connect, collaborate and flourish
- place - the architecture and aesthetics of the built environment – from grounds and maintenance to design and project management
We will unpack and explore the elements that contribute to organisational and classroom culture. That culture should be managed by design, rather than by default.
So whether you are a classroom practitioner, chaplain, facilities manager or school support staff – we have something in this program for you.
Event Information: What's on offer?
The 2022 State Conference will provide an opportunity for all school staff to collaborate and learn around the topic of 'leadership'. To help this work logistically between staff undertaking differing roles within a school, there will be a range of streams presented. These streams are presented in an overview, below.
- the leadership of pedagogy
- the leadership of the pastoral life of the school (specifically focussed on the wellbeing of young people and the adults who care for them), and
- the leadership of people and culture
- the leadership of place

Event Detail: Pedagogy Stream
The Pedagogy (Teaching and Learning) stream will focus on classroom delivery and ideally be suited to curriculum leaders, teachers, heads of department and educational assistants.

Speakers
Opening Keynote Speaker: Danielle Strickland
Danielle Strickland is currently based in Toronto, Canada. Her aggressive compassion has served people firsthand in countries all over the world. From establishing Justice Departments for The Salvation Army to launching Global anti-trafficking initiatives, to creating new movements to mobilize people towards transformational living. Danielle trains, advocates, and inspires people to live differently. Danielle is the author of 5 books with her most recent being "The Ultimate Exodus: Finding Freedom From What Enslaves You" and "The Zombie Gospel: The Walking Dead and What it means to be Human." She is host of DJStrickland Podcast, Co-founder of Infinitum, Amplify Peace and Brave Global. Danielle is a mom of 3, wife to @stephencourt and has been affectionately called the "ambassador of fun".
Pedagogy Stream Keynote Speaker: Mary Myatt
Mary is an education adviser, writer and speaker. She trained as an RE teacher and is a former government school adviser and school inspector. Drawing on her work with students, teachers and leaders she writes and speaks about learning, leadership and the curriculum. She has worked in small schools, for large trusts, national and international organisations. Her education philosophy is underpinned by several principles: that all children deserve rich demanding work, that high quality talk underpins learning, that human beings are curious and that they find deep work very satisfying. Mary has written extensively about leadership, school improvement and the curriculum: ‘High Challenge, Low Threat’, ‘Hopeful Schools’ and ‘The Curriculum: Gallimaufry to Coherence’ , ‘Back on Track’, Huh: Curriculum Conversations between subject and senior leaders and Primary Huh. She has also established Myatt & Co an online platform with films for teacher, including teaching assistants and leaders including governors. Mary has been on the board of three schools, and a trustee for a Multi Academy Trust. She cofounded the RE Quality Mark, is chair of the board for the Centre for Education and Youth and a member of the curriculum advisory group for Oak National Academy. Pastoral Stream Keynote Speaker: Dr. Rob Loe
Rob has been serving as the Executive Officer, VIC/TAS since May 2020. He has a background in teaching, school leadership and research. Rob believes passionately that a Christian school’s ethos cannot be divorced from the outcomes it seeks for its students (which must be more than academic). That ethos should make a deeply positive impact on the day-to-day lived reality of corridors and classrooms. It is the most powerful form of witness from a school. Rob has a national portfolio role that reflects his significant experience and research interests: Organisational Culture and Community Development.
Pastoral Stream Keynote Speaker: Amanda Viviers
Amanda Viviers can often be found with a pen in her hand, food spilt down her blouse and a fresh story in her heart. Author, Speaker and Radio Presenter, Amanda has published ten books and can be found in her beach shack writing her next three. She is the Narrative Lead at Compassion Australia. The co-founder of Kinwomen, a radio program designed to help women thrive. The co-founder of Change Your Story events which creates retreats that help people rewrite their story. Wife of Charl and mum of Maximus and Liberty, she lives a creative life, longing to see people live inspired.
People Stream Keynote Speaker: Daniel Flynn
Determined and resourceful, Daniel Flynn is the co-founder and managing director of one of Australia’s most successful startups, Thankyou. He co-founded Thankyou at the age of 19, and today 12 years later, Thankyou’s products are stocked by major retailers in Australia, with every product contributing to helping end global poverty. To date, Thankyou has raised over $17 million to impact the lives of people across 22 countries. Daniel is also the author of best-selling book Chapter One, a story that generated $1.4 million in sales in its first month using an unorthodox ‘pay-what-you-want’ model. He is known for his disruptive marketing and has received widespread media coverage for some truly unconventional and highly successful campaigns that led to Thankyou products being stocked by some of Australia’s biggest retailers. Daniel’s achievements as an entrepreneur have also been widely celebrated. In 2014, he was named an honoree in JCI’s Ten Outstanding Young People of the World, and in 2015 Daniel won EY Entrepreneur of the Year (for the Southern Region). In 2016 Daniel was named in the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 for Social Entrepreneurship. Daniel is known for his ability to tell stories to engage and motivate audiences to realise that they too can make their own ideas a reality.
Place Stream Keynote Speaker: Sam Haberle
Sam is an architect with over 14 years experience in tourism, hospitality, educational, health, residential, and development projects, covering all aspects of design, documentation and construction of such projects. His experience includes working with local and state government, consultancy and the private development sector. He has worked on a large range of projects from small renovations, through to $10M educational facilities and $100M tourism projects, and more recently the tallest building in Tasmania – the Collins Street Hotel. Sam has significant experience in delivering strategic outcomes with particular attention to urban form, site design, master planning, precinct planning and development feasibility. Notable Clients include: Fragrance Group, Tasmanian Catholic Education Office, 431 Hobart Pty Ltd, La Vie Collective, Forico, Change Overnight, Our Cradle, Tal GP.
Place Stream Keynote Speaker: Jonathan Buist
With more than 20 years of experience in the industry, Jono is the most experienced member of the S. Group architectural team. Across numerous projects he regularly undertakes the role of Lead Architect and Construction Manager. Throughout his career he has worked on a broad range of building typologies including tourism, residential, educational, institutional, medical and high rise buildings. These projects are for both government and private equity clients, giving him experience with the specifics of these contracts and ability to carefully contextualise a wide range of views and perspectives. He has a keen interest in the master planning and design of educational facilities and has helped guide S Group to be one of the state's leading change agents in school design. Notable Clients include: Services Australia, Tasmanian Catholic Education Office, Tourism Tasmania, Department of Justice, Department of Health and Human Services, The Public Trustee, Fragrance Group, Launceston Christian School.
