Joint Submission Lodged on SA Equal Opportunity Act Changes

28 November 2020

A joint submission with Adventist Schools Australia was lodged last Friday to the South Australian Attorney-General's Department.

The submission pointed out the significant flaws and shortcomings in the Government's proposed Equal Opportunity (Religious Bodies) Amendment Bill 2020.  It recommended that the Government -

  1. Abandon the Equal Opportunity (Religious Bodies) Amendment Bill 2020 (SA);
  2. Direct the Equal Opportunity Commission to provide more education on the essential nature of the balancing provisions within the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (SA) and the importance of religious freedom; and
  3. Focus on the preparation of amendments to the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (SA) that would introduce protections for religious freedom as recommended by the Expert Panel Report.
