Building Effective Boards: Choosing, Developing and Equipping Directors

Strong boards do not happen by chance. They are built through thoughtful succession planning, intentional recruitment and the careful development of every director. This interactive forum for Board Chairs will explore practical approaches to identifying and recruiting new board members, designing meaningful induction processes in order to develop capability and strengthen governance. Participants will have the opportunity to share experiences, discuss common challenges and exchange ideas with peers from Christian schools across Australia.

This webinar event is open to all Board Chairs from CSA member schools. Please note, you will receive a zoom link for the webinar the week before the webinar is scheduled to commence.

Program Overview and Learning Outcomes

Program Overview
The program will cover key questions such as:
» Does your constitution enable you to recruit the board your school needs?
» How do you best assess board needs when recruiting?
» How do you find the best candidates and recruit well?
» What should be part of induction for new board members?
» How do you ensure the continuing development of board members?

Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
» Identify strategies for recruiting directors who will strengthen the board and support the school's mission.
» Explore effective practices for inducting and developing new board members.

Facilitators

Daniel Pampuch: CEO Christian Schools Australia. BA, GDipEd, MEd, MBA, MTh, PhD

Daniel has been in Christian Education for 30 years working across all Australian states and territories. He has served in on a range of educational, NFP, and charity boards. Currently he is the Chair of Wesley Mission Qld and serves on the Synod Standing Committee of the UCA. He also has served as a facilitator with the Governance Institute of Australia for the past 9 years and is a Fellow of GIA, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries, as well as a graduate of AICD. Daniel was a co-contributor to the 12 module Effective Governance course developed in conjunction with Hopgood Gamin advisory group.

Dr Maria Varlet: Director of Member Services, Christian Schools Australia. BEd, GradDipEd(Media), BEdSt, MEd, EdD, GAICD

Dr Maria Varlet has been involved in Christian Education for over 30 years, holding a variety of leadership positions including Head of Research & Innovation and Campus Principal. She has served on a number of school, church and not for profit Boards, including as Deputy Chair of the CSA National Council. Maria has completed extensive formal study and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Maria holds the position of Director of Member Services and her professional interests include leadership development, professional learning, effective governance and school improvement.
