Masterclass: Transforming Christian Education, NSW

CSA are excited to be hosting a series of masterclasses by key International leaders in Christian education, Dr Jon Eckert and Dr Lynn Swaner.

The masterclasses will hold two sessions covering: Flourishing Schools and Teaching for Engagement. This masterclass will be held in person at Green Point Christian College.

Masterclasses are also being held (in person) in Wantirna South, VIC and Beerwah, QLD and (online) via LIVESTREAM.

Session Information

The masterclasses will cover two sessions, "Just Teaching" with Dr. Jon Eckert and "Flourishing Together" with Dr. Lynn Swaner.

Masterclass Session 1: Just Teaching with Dr. Jon Eckert

From his book ‘Just Teaching’, Dr Eckert will explore how great teaching requires addressing feedback, engagement, and well-being (FEW) for every student. Jon will specifically explore how to support the well-being of students and educators in life-giving ways based on evidence of what really works in teaching and will identify four key components of engagement and practical ways to deepen student and educator engagement within contemporary classroom contexts.

Masterclass Session 2: Flourishing Together with Dr. Lynn Swaner

Drawing from their excellent book ‘Flourishing Together: A Christian Vision for Students, Educators and Schools’, Lynn will present a masterclass on what it means to Flourish together in relationships with students, colleagues and communities. Their interactive session will follow an overview of the Flourishing Schools Research, specifically: Flourishing Together: Deepening Engagement with Our Students; Flourishing Educators: Deepening Connection with Our Colleagues; and, Flourishing Schools: Deepening Relationship with Our Communities.

Speakers

Guest Speaker: Dr. Jon Eckert

Dr. Jonathan Eckert is the Copple Professor of Educational Leadership at Baylor University. He taught outside of Chicago and Nashville for 12 years. After completing his doctorate at Vanderbilt University in 2008, he served at the U.S. Department of Education in both the Bush and Obama administrations on teaching quality issues. He has won multiple teaching awards in higher education and is the author of three Corwin books: Just Teaching, Leading Together, The novice Advantage, as well numerous other articles and books.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Lynn Swaner

Dr. Lynn Swaner is the Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at Association of Christian Schools International, where she leads initiatives and develops strategies to address compelling questions and challenges facing Christian education. Dr. Swaner serves as a Cardus Senior Fellow as well as a non-resident scholar at the Center for School Leadership at Baylor University. She is the co-author or editor of numerous books on Christian education, including Flourishing Together: A Christian Vision for Students, Educators, and Schools; Future Ready: Innovative Missions and Models in Christian Education; and MindShift: Catalyzing Change in Christian Education, as well as a number of peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on education. Prior to joining ACSI, she served as a school leader at a large K-12 Christian school in New York and held a post as a graduate professor of education at Long Island University. Dr. Swaner obtained her doctorate in Organization and Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City and is completing a Diploma in Strategy and Innovation at Saïd Business School of the University of Oxford.

Co-Host: Dr. Darren Iselin

Darren has extensive leadership experience within Christian education in both Australian and international contexts and has served in a wide range of CEO/executive and senior leadership roles within both K-12 schooling and higher education sectors. He is currently Director of Research and Innovation with Christian Schools Australia (CSA) and also is the Coordinator for the Cardus Education Survey Australia Project. Darren has completed extensive formal study, including doctoral studies through the University of Queensland where his PhD explored “How Principals are cultivating Sustainable School Cultures Within Christian Schools During Changing Times”. 

Co Host: Ian Liney

Ian commenced with CSA in January 2022 in the role of Executive Officer, NSW/ACT. Ian has spent the past 15 years as Principal of Wyong Christian Community School a K-12 school of 740 students in NSW. Prior to this appointment, he was Assistant Principal at Marrara Christian College in the Northern Territory. In his role as Executive Officer, Ian ensures that the NSW/ACT member schools are afforded personalised support and are provided with the resources and services they need to grow and flourish as Christian schools. In addition to his role with member schools, Ian also assists in rolling out CSA’s strategic priorities in the areas of Leadership Development and Teaching and Learning. Ian is well known in NSW and ACT, having served on the State Council of CSA from 2014 to 2020. Ian has extensive networks in Christian schooling and the wider education sector. He has been a central figure at all levels of Christian Education in Australia for the past three decades.

At the conclusion of this event, a certificate of professional learning will be made available to attendees for self-accreditation via your member dashboard. The event will address the following AITSL standards and newly released Christian Distinctive Focus areas:
